What Is Dead-Wooding?

Over time, for various reasons, a tree may lose some of its vitality, thereby making it more difficult to fully supply nutrients to all of its branches. As a result, some branches die or become weak. Dead-wooding is the arboriculture process of removing those dead or weakened branches to allow remaining limbs to flourish. One of the main reasons for performing this service is to maintain a safe environment within a tree's perimeter. Dead branches may become a potential hazard to pedestrians, vehicles, public roadways, or buildings during wind storms. This arboriculture service is also recommended for maintaining the tree’s overall structural health and strength. Removing dead branches helps to reduce the tree’s weight-carrying burden as well as to decrease its resistance to strong winds. That leads to less strain and more robustness.

When And Why Is Dead-Wooding Necessary?

For a tree itself, there are underlying purposes to dead-wooding. Though at times dead or dying branches may not be a hazard, removing them is still a good long-term maintenance service practice.

Branches die for numerous environmental reasons: insect infestations, such as Asian Long-Horned Beetles (within Toronto GTA), Gypsy Moths, or termites; deficiency of light; disease; or root damage. Naturally, sooner or later, those branches will decay back to a main stem or trunk, thereby causing abscission. When left to nature that can be a slow process leading to potential hazardous conditions during the interim. It is much better to take a proactive approach. Hire a tree service company for an assessment to provide recommended courses of action and lessen potential hazardous liabilities.

Homeowners tend to delay what they consider unnecessary expenses associated with arboriculture. Often, required work only becomes apparent when they consider selling their residential property. Yards that are aesthetically unpleasant may diminish the residence’s value. Tree crowns look, and are, much healthier with the ineffective wood removed. This arboriculture service can be performed any time of the year, though preferably not during spring budding. In some cases, the removed wood can be turned into mulch for the greater benefits of your other plants. Beechwood Tree's Certified Arborists can help you determine what is best in your situation.
